SECURITY TOPIC: "Cyber Security - Back to Basics"

Synopsis: There can be no question that the Cyber Security we have in place today is not doing its job. The headlines on any given day, for the last thirty years, prove that. For all of the sophisticated technology, the fancy buzz-words, the seminars, the webinars, the courses, the accreditations and the vast sums of money spent, if Cyber Security today were a ship, she would make the Titanic look like a model of success. We can no longer regard the breaches as being incidental; the vulnerabilities are systemic. Does that mean we throw up our hands and surrender? No! Not by a long shot. But for 30 years we have been singing the same song, hitting our heads against the same wall. The time has come to realize that we need a different approach. This does not necessarily mean using some unknown, blood-cutting-edge technologies. It means employing the technologies that already exist but utilizing them in a different manner. We need to go back to the basics, and along with Descartes, we need to question everything. We need to understand the fundamental goals of Cyber Security and then consider how best to achieve them. Through a process of re-examination, we can determine if there is a better way. That is the purpose of this presentation: To refocus on the basic goals of cyber security, and then to provide an overview, an introduction, and a conceptual understanding of how we can render Cyber Security more effective.
Speaker: C. Kerry Nemovicher, Ph.D., Principal Consultant, C. Kerry Ltd., InfraGard Executive Board Member
