Data Privacy Day
January 28, 2012

On and around January 28, 2012, the United States, Canada, and more than 40 other countries around the world will celebrate Data Privacy Day.  DPD is a collective effort to raise awareness and promote education about privacy through events, programs and initiatives.  Participants include corporations, nonprofits, government officials and representatives, privacy professionals, universities, academics, educators and students.  One of the primary goals of Data Privacy Day is to promote awareness among young people, parents, consumers and businesses.  Educational resources and materials for these audiences are available year round at www.dataprivacyday.org.  Data Privacy Day also serves the important purpose of furthering international collaboration and cooperation around data privacy and data protection issues.

Since its inception in 2008, Data Privacy Day has been recognized by the United States House of Representatives (2009), the United States Senate (2009, 2010, and 2011), the National Association of Attorneys General (2010), and numerous state Governors.  Intel, Microsoft, and Google have provided generous support and substantive participation since 2008, helping Data Privacy Day continue to grow and to reach an international audience.  Companies and universities around the world have joined the initiative as participating organizations.  This year, Data Privacy Day will continue to bring together diverse stakeholders to advance understanding of current privacy issues as DPD continues its educational outreach under the auspices of the National Cyber Security Alliance.
